Nearly 800 Baylor University students will participate in commencement exercises at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in the Ferrell Center.

Dr. George Gawrych, associate professor of history at Baylor University, recently was invited to give a lecture in Turkey about a prominent Turkish historical figure. Gawrych presented his lecture, "Ataturk as a Political and Military Genius," Nov. 9 in Ankara, Turkey.

While climate change has been an emerging topic of interest to the world community, little scientific data exists on the vulnerability and resilience of households to climate-related "shocks" and events like hurricanes and prolonged drought. But a Baylor University researcher has received more than $235,000 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to start a study that looks at coastal communities and how they react to environmental stresses.

Baylor University's accounting program continues to excel according to statistics recently released by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) for Candidate Performance on the Uniform CPA Examination. The Texas Supreme Court convened Dec. 6 at Baylor Law School for the third time in the court's modern history. Before the nine Justices heard arguments in two cases, Baylor Law School Dean Brad Toben and others paid tribute to the life and career of the late Texas Supreme Court Justice and former Baylor Law School Dean Charles W. Barrow, who died June 25, 2006.

The Texas Supreme Court will convene in the Jim Kronzer Appellate Advocacy Courtroom at Baylor University's Sheila and Walter Umphrey Law Center, the home of Baylor Law School, at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6. During their third visit to Baylor, the court will hear arguments in two cases. Prior to the arguments, Baylor will remember the late Hon. Charles Wallace Barrow, former Justice of the Texas Supreme Court (1977-84) and former dean of Baylor Law School (1984-91).

Dr. K. Fred Curtis, The C.G. Strickland Professor of Education and professor of curriculum and instruction for more than 30 years in Baylor University's School of Education, died Nov. 29 in Waco. He was 68. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 800 N. New Rd.

Dr. Mary Brucker, a professor of nursing at Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing in Dallas, has received the Recognition Award by the National Perinatal Association for her individual contribution to the field of maternal and child health.

With Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing in Dallas located nearly 100 miles from Baylor's main Waco campus, providing a high speed optical network for education and research proved to be a challenge for Baylor and its nursing school. But thanks to a timely collaboration between Baylor, Texas A&M-Health Sciences Center, Baylor University Medical Center and the Lonestar Education and Research Network (LEARN), Baylor has switched the School of Nursing to a new computer network.

Baylor University's Center for Aquatic Systems Research (CRASR) and the City of Waco paired recently with Waco ISD to help local middle school students test the water quality from streams, rivers and lakes near their schools during World Water Monitoring Day.

Funeral services have been scheduled for Baylor University senior Megan M. Small, who died Nov. 25 in an automobile accident in Robertson County. Services for Megan will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Jersey Village Baptist Church, 16518 Jersey Dr., in Jersey Village, northwest of Houston.

A campus memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in remembrance of Baylor sophomore Kate Bronstein, who died Nov. 14 from injuries in an automobile accident on Nov. 9. The memorial service will be held in The McCall Chapel located in the Stacy Riddle Forum.

Baylor University's Class of 2008 represents students from different backgrounds, majors, organizations and ambitions. However, these students are united by more than a common graduation year, as more than 84 percent of Baylor students receive financial aid of some kind to attend Baylor. Starting this year, Baylor's senior class gift will establish and support an endowed scholarship fund that will allow more students to experience Baylor, thanks to Baylor students who went before them.

The Baylor University family is mourning the death of a student over the Thanksgiving break. Megan M. Small, a senior biochemistry major from Houston, died Sunday night in an automobile accident on Highway 6, just north of Calvert in Robertson County. Funeral services are pending.

Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, Baylor University will not hold classes and will close administrative offices Wednesday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 25, while other university facilities will modify their hours.

Kate passed away Wednesday from injuries she sustained in a car accident last Friday. She was a sophomore from Houston double majoring in art history and international studies.

Dr. J. Christopher Soper, professor of political science at Pepperdine University, will deliver a lecture titled "Muslims in Europe: Singing God's Song in a Strange Land" as a part of the annual Hugh and Beverly Wamble Lecture on Religious Liberty from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, in room 116 of the Draper Academic Building. Laura Dobbins, a Baylor University graduate student from Knoxville, Tenn. has received the EA/Jeff Black Award given by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), a nonprofit, worldwide professional society.

After nearly a decade in the making, the 9-foot-tall, 1,200-pound Pyfer bear sculpture has a new home in front of Baylor University's McLane Student Life Center. The bronze sculpture, created by Dr. Douglas W. Crow, professor of German and sculptor-in-residence at Baylor, and funded through a generous gift by Carol (Trice) and John F. Pyfer of Lancaster, Pa., was installed Nov. 12 in the island circle in front of the SLC.

The Baylor University student publications department won several awards at the 7th annual Baptist Press Collegiate Journalism Conference held in Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 11-13. The Baylor Lariat, Round Up yearbook and Focus magazine were all honored at the "Excellence in Journalism" themed event, which celebrated those with a commitment to both their faith and their journalistic work.

Baylor University's Model Organization of American States team brought home several awards while competing with other 15 universities from Texas and Mexico at the World Affairs Council of San Antonio Model Organization of American States Competition held Nov. 1-3 at St. Mary's University. This was the 11th consecutive year that Baylor competed in the conference that simulates the activities of the OAS and its committees by allowing participants to assume the roles of diplomatic representatives to the OAS.

Beginning with the fall 2008 semester, Baylor University's Honors College Living-Learning Center will transition into an Honors Residential College, becoming the university's second traditional residential college to offer Baylor students of all academic majors a distinctive living-learning environment that is faculty-led.

In an expanding effort to bridge the gap between discoveries in Baylor University's research laboratories and their practical application in industry, the Baylor Advanced Research Institute, or BARI, has signed a new agreement with the University of Stuttgart in Germany to enable the exchange the students and faculty between both organizations.

Baylor law students claimed the top pass rate on the Texas State Bar Exam with 97.85 percent success rate, which was the highest pass rate for students from the nine Texas law schools. Of the 93 Baylor students who took the three-day exam in July, 91 passed on their first try.

Dr. Stanley Finger, world leader in the history of neuroscience, will speak on "Benjamin Franklin and Medical Electricity" for the annual Herbert H. Reynolds Lecture Series at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Kayser Auditorium in Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by eight different Baylor departments.

Cold and flu season is upon us, and a great deal of media attention also has been focused on Staph infections, particularly the MRSA strain. MRSA is Staphylococcus Aureus that is resistant to Methicillin and other commonly used antibiotics. Since the 1970s, MRSA has been an increasingly important cause of healthcare-associated infections. In the 1990s, MRSA emerged as a cause of infection in the community.

Baylor University's Board of Regents today approved two new academic centers of national significance and a new joint U.S. Army/Baylor doctoral degree program to help train clinicians who are prepared to conduct advanced scientific research, as well as provide quality emergency care for patients in the Military Health System and on the battlefield.

Dr. Emerson O. ("Henk") Henke, The J.E. Bush Emeritus Professor of Accounting, Master Teacher and former dean of Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business, died Oct. 29, 2007, at the age of 91. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Austin Ave., with the Rev. Dr. Jimmie Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. A visitation will be held at Wilkirson Hatch Bailey Funeral Home on Bosque Blvd. from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The American Library Association has included the works of two Baylor University professors - The Listening Heart: Vocation and the Crisis of Modern Culture by the late Dr. A.J. "Chip" Conyers and Discovering God: The Origins of the Great Religions and the Evolution of Belief by Dr. Rodney Stark - in its list of Top 10 Books in Religion for 2007. Baylor Law School's annual Dawson & Sodd P.C. Moot Court Competition, an intramural event that lasts almost three weeks, will get under way on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the law school. This year, 44 two-person teams will take part in the competition, which simulates the appellate advocacy process, from writing an appellate brief to preparing and presenting oral arguments before a panel of judges.

Louise Herrington Ornelas, for whom Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing in Dallas is named, was recently honored by the Baylor family for her endless contributions to Baylor and the nursing profession in general.

Baylor University's Cornelia Marschall Smith Professor of the Year, Dr. Ann E. Rushing, professor and associate chair of the department of biology, will deliver the annual award lecture at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in room B110 of the Baylor Sciences Building.

Baylor University's department of University Ministries sponsors Chapel in Waco Hall on Baylor's campus each Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Guests for October include theologians, authors, inspirational speakers and pastors.

Delta Delta Delta sorority at Baylor University will be hosting its inaugural Kicks for Kids kickball tournament to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and children's cancer Thursday, Sept. 27 through Friday, Sept. 28, at the fields behind the Baylor Science Building.

Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary will bring another in a long line of world-renowned theologians to the Baylor campus, when Dr. Ben Witherington III, professor of New Testament interpretation at Asbury Theological Seminary, delivers the annual Parchman Endowed Lectures Oct. 2-4 in the seminary's Paul Powell Chapel. The lectures are free and open to the public.

Laura Dobbins, a Baylor University graduate student from Knoxville, Tenn. has been awarded a Greater Research Opportunities Graduate Fellowship by the Environmental Protection Agency. Dobbins is among 98 students chosen from more than 1,200 applicants nationwide for the highly coveted fellowships.

Alpha Tau Omega and the Place2BU will host the third annual bed racing tournament Friday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m. at Fountain Mall on Baylor's campus.

October signifies Baylor University's celebration of Latino culture and contributions with special activities on campus during Hispanic Heritage Month, sponsored by the Hispanic Student Association (HSA) and other student organizations.
