Baylor University's Mayborn Museum Complex is pleased to announce its 2007 summer traveling exhibit - Wrapped in Tradition: The Chihuly Collection of American Indian Trade Blankets - which will be on display in the Thomas E. and Emilyne Weed Anding Traveling Exhibit Gallery at the museum from May 20-Aug. 18.

Baylor University senior James Nortey, a philosophy and political science major from Cedar Park, recently was selected for placement in the prestigious Federal Bureau of Investigation honors internship program. Nortey joins fellow Baylor student Christine Tamer as one of only 56 students selected from a nationwide pool of applicants.

With more than half of all recent industrial innovation in the United States attributed to advances pioneered through scientific research, publicly-funded research and development is vital to the foundation of today's scientific and technological progress.

As cellulosic ethanol becomes more and more a front-runner to help reduce the country's "addiction to oil," the high cost of producing it still stands as one of the major hurdles. But now, Baylor University researchers have identified about 40 different compounds created in the pre-treatment step when making cellulosic ethanol that could be responsible for restricting the fermenting process, which ultimately leads to higher production costs.

As the United States Air Force commemorates its 60th anniversary, Baylor University's Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Detachment 810 will celebrate that proud tradition and its own milestone on Saturday, as the program commissions its largest class of second lieutenants in 48 years.

The Baylor University Board of Regents at its spring meeting today approved a $345 million operating budget for 2007-08. The board also elected officers, heard an alumni report and celebrated the groundbreakings of two significant facilities to be built on the Baylor campus.

Two Baylor University researchers have been awarded several significant grants from OXiGENE Inc., an international biopharmaceutical company, to continue and greatly expand their research into new cancer fighting compounds.

Baylor University will celebrate its annual commencement with a weekend of events Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12. More than 1,700 students will participate in commencement exercises, which have taken place annually since 1854. To date, Baylor has produced more than 135,000 graduates.

Three noted scholar/teachers have been selected as finalists for Baylor University's 2008 Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching, the single largest award given to an individual for exceptional teaching. The award winner, who will be announced in spring 2008, will receive $200,000 plus $25,000 for his or her home department and will teach in residence at Baylor during fall 2008 or spring 2009.

The Baylor University family is mourning the loss of Caitlin Creed, a freshman social work major from Homewood, Ala., who died in a car accident Monday, April 30, near Palestine. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Autry Funeral Home, 1025 SE Loop 456, in Jacksonville, Texas. Funeral services for Caitlin will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Central Baptist Church, 1909 E. Rusk St., in Jacksonville.

Christine Tamer, a junior journalism major from Colleyville, has received a place in the highly competitive Federal Bureau of Investigation honors internship program. Tamer is one of only 56 students selected from a nationwide pool of thousands of applicants.

Gary Guadagnolo, a junior University Scholar from Arlington, has been awarded a prestigious U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship, which he will use to study Russian in St. Petersburg this summer. Guadagnolo was one of 30 award recipients from more than 550 applications.

Three Baylor University seniors and a 2006 graduate have been selected to receive the Fulbright Scholarship for the 2007-08 academic year, bringing the number of Baylor students who have received the prestigious honor since 2001 to 11.

Dr. Scott Davis, cofounder and former president of ViaGen Inc., an Austin biotechnology company, will speak about animal reproduction and genetics at 7 p.m., Friday, April 27, in the Baylor Science Building room B.110. Davis is the featured speaker at this year's Davidson Lecture, hosted by Baylor's biology department. The biology department also will hold its annual Awards Night before the lecture. Dr. Keith Solomon, a professor of environmental biology at the University of Guelph in Ontario, will speak this Friday, April 27, at Baylor University about the ecological and human health risk of the use of glyphosate to control coca and poppy crops in Latin America. The lecture, which will be at 3:15 p.m. in the Baylor Sciences Building room C105, is free and open to the public.

Baylor President John M. Lilley announced that Baylor will light the university's Pat Neff Hall tower on Monday and Tuesday nights in Virginia Tech's school colors of maroon and orange, a "symbol of our continued thoughts and prayers for the victims and in a demonstration of support for the entire Virginia Tech community."

Longtime Baylor University servant-leader Dorothy Barfield Kronzer died April 14 at the age of 84. Kronzer's 67-year relationship with Baylor was characterized by her dedication to leadership positions on the Board of Trustees and Alumni Association executive board and her faithful philanthropy to the university.

Dr. Randall O'Brien, executive vice president and provost at Baylor University, has announced the appointment of Dr. Lee C. Nordt as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the university's largest academic unit with 26 departments. Nordt, an associate professor of geology who currently serves as the college's interim dean, will start his duties immediately.

In light of the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech, the Baylor University Counseling Center is available for students who wish to speak to a trained counselor. The BUCC provides a variety of mental health services to interested students and also makes special arrangements for counseling during crisis times.
The Counseling Center employs five full-time staff members, a psychiatrist, dietician and three graduate students. They are in the process of adding two additional positions to the staff as well.

Renowned around the world for his research into early evolution and paleobiology, Dr. Simon Conway Morris will speak at Baylor University on Tuesday, April 24, about the Cambrian "explosion" and his work as it relates to the famous Burgess Shale and similar deposits found around the world. Conway Morris, a professor of evolutionary paleobiology at the University of Cambridge, focuses his research on the constraints of evolution and the historical processes that lead to the emergence of complexity.

The Baylor Business Network was the unanimous selection for the Bobby G. Bizzell SWBDA Innovation Award, presented during the Southwest Business Deans' Association Annual Meeting Feb. 25-27, in San Antonio. Judges for the annual award, which was established to encourage innovation and continuous improvement in business education, cited the BBN concept for its "transferability" to deans at other business schools to reach their alumni base.

Brothers Under Christ fraternity (BYX) will host its eighth annual Island Party, a Christian concert festival, from 6 p.m. to midnight, April 20, at Fountain Mall on the Baylor University campus. Dr. Garrett Cook, cultural anthropology and archaeology professor at Baylor University, will present a lecture titled "Renewing a Maya World within a Neoliberal World" at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in Room 116 of the Draper Academic Building on the Baylor campus. In 2005, a team of Baylor Law students captured the American Trial Lawyers Association Student Trial Advocacy Competition and were declared the national champions. History repeated itself on Sunday, April 1, when the Baylor team of Danny Back, Josh Hedrick, Danny Stokes and James Williams were crowned the national champions at the American Association for Justice (formerly the ATLA) national finals in New Orleans.

The Baylor University student publications department won nine on-site contests and 35 pre-published awards at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention in San Antonio March 22-24. Eight students received awards from contests held Thursday, March 22, and 17 students won awards from material published from January-December 2006. The Baylor Lariat, Round Up yearbook and Focus magazine also received accolades.

Dr. Barry Black, the first African American to serve as chaplain of the United States Senate, will be the featured speaker of this year's Public Leadership Series at Baylor University. Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary will host nearly 200 pastors and laypeople who minister in Hispanic churches during the annual Hispanic Preaching Conference March 30-31 at Truett Seminary.

An internationally known composer of church music for the United Methodist Church and the only person to have edited two major hymnals for the same denomination in the 20th century will present Baylor University's 21st annual Northcutt Lecture on April 3.

The Baylor Law School mock trial team of Danny Back, Josh Hedrick, Danny Stokes and James Williams recently captured first place at the American Association for Justice (formerly the American Trial Lawyers Association) northeast regional competition in Boston and will travel to New Orleans to compete in the National Trial Competition on March 29-April 1.

Baylor University's Department of Student Activities will begin offering The Ride on April 1, 2007, to better accommodate students' on-campus travel needs at night. With The Ride's night hours, the Blue Route Night bus service will be discontinued. The Ride currently takes students to a wide range of on-campus locations.

Derek Walcott, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, will read from his works during Baylor University's celebrated Beall Poetry Festival. The annual event, now in its 13th year, will take place Thursday, March 29, through Saturday, March 31, in the Meadows Recital Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building on the Baylor campus. All events are free and open to the public.

Supporters of the Waco Mammoth Site received some good news from the National Park Service. Following a two-year Waco Mammoth Site Special Resource Study, National Park Service leadership has indicated their support of the study's findings that the site does meet the NPS criteria for significance, suitability and feasibility for inclusion in the park system, according to Michelle D'Arcy, who has headed up the study.

Eleven Baylor University students were recognized in the Texas Senate on March 26, as part of Bob Bullock Scholars Day in the state capital. The 10 undergraduates and one graduate student are spending the entire spring semester as Bullock Scholars working in the 80th session of the Texas Legislature.

Kenneth Ike, a junior University Scholar in the honors program at Baylor University, is one of 65 students - and only two from Texas - from 56 U.S. colleges and universities to be named a 2007 Truman Scholar. Ike was selected for the prestigious honor on the basis of his leadership potential, intellectual ability and likelihood of "making a difference."

Francoise Cachin, director emeritus of the Reunion des Musees Nationaux of France (Museums of France), will deliver Baylor University's Allbritton Art Lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in room 149 in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Building. Cachin's lecture, "Self portraits: Manet to Gauguin," is free and open to the public.

Hispanic couples and families are the focus of a new $2.5 million grant aimed at creating healthy relationships. Dr. Preston Dyer and Dr. Kim Kotrla, both Baylor School of Social Work professors, will be evaluating the new five-year Hispanic Active Relationship Project (HARP), created by Kelly Simpson, director of the Active Relationship Center (ARC) in Dallas, which received the grant.

Baylor University is mourning the death of Patricia (Trish) Ring, a senior nursing major from Coppell, Texas, who died unexpectedly Sunday, March 25, at her home in Coppell.

Baylor University students, staff and faculty will participate in Steppin' Out, the biannual university-wide, community-wide day of service Saturday, March 24, from noon to 5 p.m. at various locations in the Waco community.

Dr. Robert Lieber, who has consulted on foreign policy issues for the U.S. State Department and National Intelligence Estimates, will deliver Baylor University's Laura Blanche Jackson Lecture in World Affairs. For the past few months, Baylor University graduate student Ryan McGhee has spent nearly every free minute doing one thing: trying to build a device that will bring a basic necessity to someone in need.

The Baylor chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) will host their fifth-annual March to College Day on Friday, March 23. The all-day event will bring more than 300 Waco-area high schoolers to the Baylor campus for a look at college life. Dr. Russell Lester, retired emeritus professor of religion at Baylor, passed away Saturday, March 17, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 78. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home in Waco.

Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business has been ranked among the top 25 private undergraduate business school programs in BusinessWeek's rankings of the Top 50 Undergraduate Business Schools.

After conducting a national search, Baylor University President John M. Lilley announced today the appointment of Pattie Orr, director of user services and the policy and planning officer in the information services division at Wellesley College, as Baylor's vice president for information technology and dean of libraries, effective June 1.

Dr. Randall O'Brien, provost and executive vice president at Baylor University, has announced the appointment of Dr. David E. Garland, associate dean for academic affairs and The William M. Hinson Professor of Christian Scriptures, as dean of George W. Truett Theological Seminary. A unanimous selection of the Truett faculty, Garland will begin his term as dean on June 1, succeeding well-known Texas Baptist pastor and leader Paul W. Powell, who will officially retire on May 31.

Baylor University along with several other Waco companies have created aviation posters that will be displayed in the Capitol Rotunda in Austin March 19 - 23.
