This April, Baylor University once again joins universities and communities around the country to increase public awareness and prevention education about sexual assault and interpersonal violence during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).

Throughout the month, Baylor is providing opportunities for students, faculty and staff to join in the University’s commitment to fostering a safe and healthy campus, preventing acts of sexual violence and treating all members of the campus community with dignity and respect.

Wednesday, April 29, 2026

Empowerment Journey & Denim Day, Baylor Sciences Building (BSB), Second Floor 200.5 Elevator Landing, noon to 2 p.m.

Denim Day, a national awareness campaign, encourages wearing denim on the last Wednesday of Sexual Assault Awareness Month to demonstrate support for survivors of sexual assault. Participants are encouraged to share photos on Instagram with #DenimDay and tag @BU_Equity. Denim Day was established in 1999 in response to a judge’s ruling that a survivor could not have been assaulted since she was wearing tight jeans. The day was set aside in solidarity with survivors and to shift misconceptions surrounding sexual assault.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL SEXUAL VIOLENCE RESOURCE CENTER

The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) is the leading nonprofit in providing information and tools to prevent and respond to sexual violence. NSVRC translates research and trends into best practices that help individuals, communities and service providers achieve real and lasting change.

Each April, NSVRC leads Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a campaign to educate and engage the public in addressing the widespread issue of sexual assault. On college campuses, research has found that one in four women and one in 15 men are sexually assaulted during their time in college. With that knowledge, individuals, communities and the private sector are already successfully combatting the risk of sexual violence through conversations, programs, policies and research-based tools that promote safety and respect for all members of the community.
