University Monitoring Weather Conditions; Sub-freezing Temperatures, Dangerous Wind Chills Expected Sunday-Wednesday

WACO, Texas (Jan. 12, 2024) – With the 2024 spring semester starting on Tuesday, Jan. 16, Baylor University officials are monitoring National Weather Service forecasts that show Waco, McLennan County and Central Texas will experience a deep freeze from Sunday through Wednesday morning with temperatures remaining below freezing with dangerous wind chills for around 72 hours.

At this time, the University does not expect any disruption to the first day of class on Tuesday. Current NWS forecast models show the Waco/Central Texas area could receive some winter precipitation (freezing rain, snow or sleet), but the amount is uncertain at this time. Please continue to monitor the weather as conditions can change over the weekend.

Campus preparations by Baylor Facilities are already underway, such as adjusting building temperatures and limiting outside air intake, draining key outdoor water features, and dripping faucets. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has begun treating area roadways in anticipation of icy conditions.

Faculty and Staff, and students who are returning to the Baylor Waco campus, should take some important individual precautions:

  • Plan your travel ahead of time and monitor weather conditions.
  • Remember the Four P’s: Take care of people, pets, plants and pipes. For students who live in an off-campus apartment, follow your apartment manager’s instructions (ex: drip faucets and open your kitchen and bathroom cabinets). Students who live in an on-campus residence hall should check their Baylor email for any actions they may need to take from Campus Living & Learning.
  • Be very cautious on roadways, sidewalks and other surfaces.

BAYLOR DINING: Penland Crossroads is open and operating during regular hours. East Village will open Monday night with other dining halls beginning regular hours on Tuesday. Chick-fil-A in the SUB Food Court is expected to be open Monday, Jan. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. REMINDER: Memorial Dining is closed for renovations through Feb. 16. Dining updates are available at Baylor Dining’s website, Facebook and Instagram.

UNIVERSITY OPERATIONS COMMUNICATION: Baylor officials will continue to monitor the weather throughout the weekend and into next week. If there are any changes to University operations, this information will be communicated to students, faculty and staff via Baylor Alert email/text messages, official Baylor social media, including Facebook, Instagram and X (Twitter) and on the Baylor website.
