Associated Press: Giving thanks isn’t just a holiday tradition. It’s part of how humans evolved  

Researchers delving into the science of gratitude have found that gratitude likely played a key role in helping our ancestors band together and survive. “This is something that is part of our human DNA,” said Sarah Schnitker, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor. Also quoted is Jenae Nelson, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher who studies gratitude at Baylor and Harvard. The AP article was picked up by well over 100 national media outlets. 

Southeast Texas Record: Baylor Law Launches Family Law Clinic to Empower Self-Represented Litigants  

Baylor Law is set to open its Family Law Clinic in fall 2024. The clinic will aim to provide support to the increasing number of pro se or self-representing litigants. Stephanie Tang, J.D., associate professor of law, is quoted about the type of support the clinic will offer.  

The Leader News: Opera in the Heights brings a classic fairy tale to life 

An English translation of the opera “Hansel and Gretel” by Baylor School of Music Assistant Professor of Vocal Coaching Kathleen Kelly, M.M., will be featured in an Opera in the Heights’ performance in Houston. Kelly is quoted about her unique translation’s ability to provides English-speaking audiences with an authentic experience.  

KFVS-TV (CBS/Cape Girardeau, MO): History on the air 

The Baylor Collections of Political Materials at the W. R. Poage Legislative Library holds materials from Don Michel, a former radio broadcaster in a small town in Illinois, including audio recordings and the sheet of wire copy he used to scribble the name of former President John F. Kennedy’s assassin long before any other news source had the information.

Jenny Howell, Ph.D., serves as director of Baylor’s Theology, Ecology and Food Justice Program, which offers a holistic approach to educate students, ministers, leaders and more on the Church’s role in addressing hunger. In this Baylor Connections, she takes listeners inside Waco’s World Hunger Relief Farm, where her work takes place and models approaches to address hunger globally, analyzes complex issues impacting hunger and considers the role of hope as the Holidays approach. 

The Banner: California CRC Hosts Korean Church Disability Conference  

Erik Carter, Ph.D., The Luther Sweet Endowed Chair in Disabilities and executive director of the Baylor University Center on Developmental Disabilities, was a main speaker at the 2023 Korean Church Disability Conference, which focused on the importance of churches focusing attention and resources to disability ministry.
