WACO, Texas (July 30, 2023) – Baylor University researchers and faculty experts were featured in national and local media stories about a $2.5 million federal grant for Baylor social work faculty to expand its training in providing mental health services in Waco schools, the importance of respect and dignity of collecting data in the workplace and how Baylor’s 2023 Young Alumna of the Year serves as a role model for students hoping to follow her footsteps into the STEM fields.

Waco Tribune-Herald: $2.5 million grant to expand Baylor social work training at Waco schools

A$2.5 million federal grant will allow Baylor University’s Diana R. Garland School of Social Work to expand its training in providing mental health services in Waco schools. Social work lecturer Carrie Arroyo is leading the program with Mary Zane Nelson and Stephanie Boddie, Ph.D., Baylor associate professor of church and community ministries. KWTX-TV (CBS/Waco) also reported on the grant.

Waco Tribune-Herald: PHOTOS: Young math learners meet Baylor athletes

Children in the Baylor School of Education’s Math for Early Learners Academy got to meet Baylor athletes after a monthlong program that taught them basic math skills. Founded and directed by mathematics education professor Sandi Cooper, Ph.D., the program has served 70 children ages 4 to 6 from La Vega, Midway and Waco school districts.

Stephen Newby, D.M.A., recently named as the first holder of Baylor University’s Lev H. Prichard III Chair in the Study of Black Worship, sees the interdisciplinary aspect of the position as a way to pass on the legacy and message of Black gospel music. Dr. Newby’s hire also was covered by Baptist News Global and the Baptist Standard.
