WACO, Texas (Jan. 9, 2020) – The Texas Department of Transportation reports that crews have completed the removal of the I-35 southbound mainlanes that cross over MLK Boulevard and are working to clear the debris from the intersection. All east and westbound lanes that cross under I-35 at MLK Boulevard are anticipated to reopen as early as Friday, Jan. 10, after noon.

Soon after crews finish near MLK Boulevard, work to remove the southbound mainlanes that cross over University Parks Drive will start. All lanes on University Parks Drive that cross under I-35 will be closed as early as the evening of Friday, Jan. 10, and anticipated to re-open the morning of Monday, Jan. 13. As bridge work is underway, traffic will need to use MLK Boulevard or 4th/5th Streets to cross under I-35.

Work to reconstruct and expand the southbound I-35 mainlanes through Waco will continue with the removal of the southbound mainlanes that cross over BUS 77 and the Brazos River. Each removal is anticipated to take two days and will include closures of all east and westbound lanes that cross under I-35 at the removal location. During the removal over the Brazos River, there will be impacts to both river traffic and pedestrian pathways. More information on this will be shared as work progresses.

This work follows the shift of all mainlane traffic to the northbound side of I-35 from BUS 77 to 18th Street, as well as the closure of southbound Exit 337 (BUS 77/Elm Avenue) and Exit 335B (University Parks Drive). Exit 335C (MLK Blvd) should be used for access to University Parks Drive, 4th/5th Streets and Downtown Waco. This work will allow crews to rebuild the southbound mainlanes, a project anticipated to last through mid-2021.

Please remember all schedules are dependent on work progress and field conditions.
