WACO, Texas (Oct. 10, 2017) — The Mayborn Museum Complex is celebrating the 20th annual Earth Science Week in collaboration with Baylor University’s department of geosciences, through Oct. 13, 2017. The museum is hosting daily activities where visitors have the opportunity to engage with Baylor geosciences professors while exploring resources and activities related to a specific focus within earth sciences.
One of the highlights of this week is the Earth Science Symposium, which is designed to educate visitors about research on past, present and future implications of climate change. The symposium, “Climate Change: Earth’s Past, Present and Future,” will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Mayborn Museum Complex, 1300 S. University Parks Drive. It will include lectures and a panel discussion by Baylor professors and leading colleagues in the field.
“The geosciences are critical for understanding the natural world around us and how we can address challenges and opportunities in areas such as climate change, natural disasters, mineral and energy resources, biological evolution, agriculture and outdoor recreation,” said Dan Peppe, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the graduate program in Baylor University’s department of geosciences, in a press release from Mayborn Museum.
“The activities at the Mayborn during Earth Science Week will be great opportunities to celebrate and discover more about the geosciences,” he said.
Kerry Cook, Ph.D., from the University of Texas at Austin, will present “The Science of Global Warming” from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Sarah Feakins, Ph.D., from University of Southern California will present “Wax impressions of past warm climates” from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The symposium will conclude with a panel discussion on climate change from 2 to 4 p.m., moderated by Peppe.
