Baylor University's division of continuing education will begin winter classes this week, with sessions ranging from "Great Decisions," a popular, public education program about foreign policy and world affairs, to "Business Strategies for E-Business," which helps business owners make informed e-commerce decisions. Traditional courses also will be offered through Baylor continuing education on computer skills, art, humanities, foreign languages, music, physical fitness and recreation, and personal and professional development.
"Great Decisions," an eight-session program of the nonpartisan, nonprofit Foreign Policy Association, will begin Thursday, Feb. 5, and run each Thursday through April 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Lakeshore Baptist Church, 5801 Bishop in Waco. In addition to discussing fast-changing and sometimes volatile foreign policy topics, participants will have the opportunity to voice their opinions through ballots, the results of which are sent to the White House, the departments of State and Defense, members of Congress and the national media.
The topics and Baylor faculty presenters are:

  • Feb. 5 - The Media and Foreign Policy, Dr. Lianne Fridriksson, Journalism
  • Feb. 12 - Latin American Overview, Dr. Joan Supplee, History
  • Feb. 19 - Weapons of Mass Destruction, Dr. Rene Massengale, Biology
  • Feb. 26 - U.S. and Europe, Dr. David Longfellow, History
  • March 4 - Diverse Islam, Dr. Lynn Tatum, Religion
  • March 11 - The Philippines, Dr. Victor Hinojosa, Political Science
  • March 25 - Reform in the Middle East, Dr. Linda Adams, Political Science
  • April 1 - Public Diplomacy, Dr. Andrew Konitzer-Smirnov, Political Science

Each participant receives a briefing book on the issues covered in "Great Decisions." The cost for the course is $60 for an individual or $100 per couple.
"Business Strategies for E-Business" will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. each Thursday from Feb. 5-26 in room 210 of the Cashion Academic Center in the Hankamer School of Business. Participants in the four sessions will learn more about the e-commerce side of e-market space, including terminology, technology, methods and limitations, from Roland Eichelberger, lecturer in the information systems department at Baylor. The cost for the course is $50.
"Informed citizens make better decisions when they vote, manage their businesses, work with organizations, and communicate with friends and family," said Annette Lindsey, director of continuing education at Baylor. "By enrolling in Great Decisions to gain knowledge about eight foreign policy issues or learning aspects of e-commerce or studying Arabic or Spanish or improving one's business writing, one will be better equipped to respond to contemporary issues. These short noncredit continuing education courses at Baylor provide opportunities for people to enjoy lifelong learning."
Continuing Education courses feature quality instruction by Baylor faculty and local experts. Participants can choose from more than 50 short courses, offered each fall and spring, and other specialized programs, including:

  • The Certificate Program in Nonprofit Management
  • The Baylor Institute for Learning in Retirement
  • The Advanced Placement Institute
  • Online and correspondence professional development courses
