Baylor to Celebrate Founders Day Feb. 2
Baylor University will reflect on the school's pioneers during the annual Founders Day celebration at the 11 a.m. section of Chapel-Forum on Monday.
The event recognizes the efforts of people such as R.E.B. Baylor, the institution's namesake; William Tryon, the man who originated the idea for the school; and James Huckins, the university's first fund-raiser. The highlight of the program surrounds the awarding of the Founders Medal. The medal represents the most distinguished award given by Baylor.
Baylor will award Regent Emerita Dorothy Barfield Kronzer of Houston the 1998 Founders Medal. Kronzer served as a Baylor trustee from 1978 to 1987. She served on the executive board of the Baylor Alumni Association for 17 years and served as the first woman president of the association.
She serves on the Alumni Association Building Fund Steering Committee and participates in the Heritage Club and Baylor Fling. Kronzer co-founded the Herbert H. Reynolds Summer School for Retired Persons and served as a founding board member of the Baylor Women's Association in Houston.
The university began giving the Founders Medal in 1969 to recognize individuals who make significant contributions to the life of Baylor. The National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., permanently displays a copy of the Founders Medal.
