Umlauf Sabbatical Art Exhibit Opens Jan. 21
An art exhibit featuring the works of Karl Umlauf, artist-in-residence at Baylor, opens Tuesday, Jan. 21, and runs through Friday, March 7, in the Martin Museum of Art in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center on the Baylor campus.
Selections in the exhibit are comprised of works of art created by Umlauf during his university sabbatical. From January through August of 1996, Umlauf traveled throughout France, Germany and England.
"The experiences he had while traveling influenced what is on exhibit," said Dr. Heidi Hornik, assistant professor of art history.
Umlauf specializes in urban cityscapes or urban retrieval. This artistic style takes objects that previously had a use in society and gives them a new function. "His work is very abstract," Hornik said.
The Umlauf exhibit features 23 pieces, primarily sculptural and mixed media. However, Umlauf is a prolific drawing artist and two-dimensional works also will be shown. Those who attend the exhibit will receive a catalog which highlights 14 pieces of the exhibit.
To accompany the opening of the exhibit, Umlauf will lecture on his art and his sabbatical at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 in room 149 of the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center. A reception will immediately follow the lecture.
The Martin Museum of Art is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tues.-Fri. and noon until 5 p.m. on Saturday.
