Faculty to Discuss Challenge of Christian Education Feb. 4

The Rev. William H. Willimon, dean of the chapel and professor of Christian ministry at Duke University, will speak on "The Challenge of Christian Higher Education" at the Faculty Retreat at Baylor University on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
The program, to be held in the Cashion Academic Center at the Hankamer School of Business, will include a 12:30 p.m. luncheon on the fifth floor of Cashion. Willimon will be the keynote speaker.
At 2 p.m., in Room 101 at Cashion, a faculty group discussion with Willimon will focus on "The Challenge of Ethical Education." He will make a short presentation and will field questions from faculty members.
Another group discussion is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Room 101, with Willimon speaking on "Education and the Disciplines of Friendship."
Willimon has been dean of the chapel and professor of Christian ministry at Duke since 1984. He preaches each Sunday in the Duke Chapel at the center of Duke's campus and directs the programs of campus ministry there. He also serves as a professor in the Duke Divinity School as well as teaching his popular course, "The Search for Meaning," in Duke's undergraduate curriculum.
A graduate of Wofford College, Yale Divinity School and Emory University, Willimon has served as pastor of churches in Georgia and South Carolina. In 1992, he was named as the first Distinguished Alumnus of Yale Divinity School. He is the author of 37 books and his articles have appeared in numerous publications.
Willimon has given lectures and taught courses at many schools for pastors and at colleges and universities throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. In 1988, he served on the theological faculty of the University of Bonn, Germany, and in 1991 he was Distinguished Guest Professor at the University of Muenster, Germany.
Chair of the Faculty Retreat organizing committee is Dr. W. James Truitt, professor and chair of economics, who serves as the Herman W. Lay Professor of Private Enterprise and acting director of the Center for Private Enterprise. Other members of the committee include Dr. Janelle M. Walter, associate professor of family and consumer sciences; Jerry Luckhardt, assistant professor and associate director of bands; and Dr. Randy M. Wood, professor of curriculum and instruction and director of the Center for Christian Education.
