Black Heritage Week Scheduled for Feb. 1-8
Black Heritage Week will be celebrated at Baylor University the week of Feb. 1-8. Numerous events are planned around this year's theme of "Destroying the Shackles of Ignorance."
The week's events will include a market place on Saturday, Feb. 1 in Barfield Drawing Room in the Bill Daniel Student Center. The market, which runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will showcase arts, crafts, food and make-up booths. On Monday, Feb. 3, Chapel-Forum will focus on Black heritage, and at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, a lip sinc and talent show will be held in the Barfield Drawing room.
A book display emphasizing Black literature will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5 in the Student Activities Building. A banquet is planned for Thursday, Feb. 6. Special entertainment will be provided by Glo Dean Baker who will perform "Sometimes I Find It Hard To Sing and Dance." Using song, drama, pantomime and narration, this production will trace the history of African-Americans. To close out the week's events, the Heavenly Voices Gospel Fest is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in Waco Hall.
"Black Heritage Week events are cross-cultural and they help people understand the people and the culture," said Sherri Hopkins, coordinator of Black Heritage week and a member of the Association of Black Students which is sponsoring the week's events.
