Southwestern Journalism Congress Awards Lariat First Place
The Southwestern Journalism Congress recently awarded Baylor University's student newspaper, The Lariat, with first place in best feature story composition and first place in best one-topic picture page composition.
The Lariat adviser Jason Ranton feels these awards are a "testimony to the excellence of The Lariat and show the competitiveness of the newspaper among other universities."
Thomas Bartlett, present editor-in-chief, won first place for his feature, "Trash or Treasure," which focused on the Goodie Mill, a local thrift store.
David Hill, present copy editor, won first place for his one-topic picture page composition, "Open 24 Hours." The center spread consisted of eight photos depicting Baylor students at Fran's, a local coffee shop.
Both compositions were featured in fall 1995 editions of The Lariat.
Other members of the Congress include major universities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.
Managing editors from Birmingham, Ala., Jackson, Miss., Memphis, Tenn., and West Palm Beach, Fla., were judges for the divisions.
