Renowned Philosopher to Speak at Baylor Sept. 9

Dr. Martha Nussbaum, the Ernst Freund Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, will speak on "Compassion and Public Life" at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, in the Jones Theater of the Baylor University Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center.
The lecture is sponsored by the Beall-Russell Lectures in the Humanities. Nussbaum is a highly renowned American philosopher in the areas of literature, ethics and philosophy of law. She has served on the faculties of Brown and Harvard Universities teaching in the areas of philosophy, classics and literature.
The author of five books, Nussbaum wrote "Poetic Justice: The Literary Imagination and Public Life" in 1996. She wrote other books in the area of literature and philosophy in 1978, 86, 90, 94 and will soon publish a book on reform in higher education.
Nussbaum has served as a visiting lecturer and held visiting professorship at universities around the world and is held in the highest regard in her field, said Dr. Robert Baird, professor and chair of philosophy and Master Teacher at Baylor.
"Martha Nussbaum is one of the most prominent philosophers on the American philosophical scene," he said.
