Debate Team Places Third in National Tournament
WACO, Texas-Baylor University's debate team recently won third place at the National Debate Tournament at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The team of Charles Blanchard, a senior from McAllen, Texas, and Kelly Dunbar, a junior from St. Joseph, Mo., competed for Baylor in the semifinals of the tournament to win third place.
According to Dr. Karla Leeper, assistant professor of communication studies and the Glenn R. Capp Professor of Forensics, Blanchard and Dunbar beat teams from Harvard University, Northwestern University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.
"This year was good for Baylor overall," said Leeper. "Out of 72 teams in the tournament, three were from Baylor."
Other teams in the semifinals included members representing the University of Iowa, who won and advanced to the finals, the University of Michigan and Emory University. Emory defeated Baylor in the semifinals.
The topic of the tournament focused on increasing the United States' security assistance to the Middle East.
