Baylor Dr Pepper Open Badminton Tourney Set for Jan. 26-27
Baylor University's Badminton Club and Dr Pepper will sponsor a badminton tournament Jan. 26-27 in Russell Gymnasium.
The tournament, sanctioned by the United States Badminton Association (USBA), consists of men and women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles divisions.
Several recreational college teams in addition to Baylor's Badminton Club will participate in the college bracket including the University of North Texas, Texas A&M University, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at Arlington and Rice University.
According to E.E. "Dutch" Schroeder, associate professor of health, human performance and recreation, Baylor has held an annual badminton tournament since 1948.
Friday's college tournament will consist of registration and warm-up from 5:30-6 p.m. followed by singles beginning at 6 p.m. and doubles at 7 p.m.
Saturday's events consist of registration and warm-up from 8:30-9 a.m. followed by an open tournament for college students, a senior tournament for players 40 years and up, and a master tournament for players 50 years and up. Singles begin at 9 a.m. and doubles begin at 11 a.m.
USBA members are not required to pay an entry fee. Non-members must pay a $5 participation fee. Friday's events are $5 each while the first Saturday event costs $15, along with an extra $5 fee for each additional Saturday event. A minimum of four entries are required for an event and each player may enter a maximum of four events.
Awards will be presented to winners and runners-up in each event and a light lunch will be served on Saturday.
Entry forms may be picked up at Schroeder's office, in room 214 in Marrs McLean Gymnasium. The entry deadline for the tournament is Monday, Jan. 22.
