Armstrong Browning Library Receives $300,000 From Mills Cox Estate
The Armstrong-Browning Library at Baylor University has recently received a $300,000 bequest from the estate of the late Margaret Cox (Mrs. Mills Cox) of Houston.
"Mrs. Cox saw this as a wonderful building in Texas, and she supported it in every way," said Mairi Rennie, director of Armstrong-Browning.
The bequest is to be used to purchase letters, manuscripts and memorabilia of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and other 19th century authors. "Items come on the international market, and to hold our own with other institutions, we have to move on anything special. Mrs. Cox understood that," Rennie said.
Mills Cox, a graduate of the Baylor School of Law in 1919, was a lifetime contributor to Baylor and died in 1984. His wife, Margaret, was also a longtime contributor to Baylor and a major benefactor of the Browning Library. She died in 1992.
The Armstrong-Browning Library contains more than 2,000 letters, manuscripts, personal items and other materials related the Brownings. Materials are added to the collection every year.
