Baylor Women's Soccer Team to Play for National Championship
The Women's Soccer Team of Baylor University recently won the championship of the Texas Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Conference for the third straight year and will play for the national championship Nov. 16-18 in Austin.
The team competed against such schools as the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Rice and Oklahoma this season, compiling a 12-0-1 record.
The Baylor Women's Team is the number one seed from Region IV, which includes Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico and Texas.
Twelve teams across the nation have qualified to participate in the National Championship.
"We are very enthused about going to the nationals," said Steve Mormino, director for recreational sports. He added that he is particularly proud of the women's team because the team is comprised of young members. There is only one senior on the team.
"This team is an excellent cross-section representation of Baylor," Mormino said.
The University of Texas will host the national championship tournament. The games will be played at the Whitaker Fields, located on 51st and Guadalupe streets.
The participating teams are seeded into three pools, with the top two teams in each round-robin pool and two wild-card teams advancing to the quarter-finals.
Baylor's first tournament game will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 16, against Ohio University. The second game will be at 4 p.m. against Miami and the third game will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 17, against the University of Illinois.
The quarterfinal games will be played at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 17. The semi-finals game will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, and the championship game will be played at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18.
