I-35 Waco Plans Mainlane Closures from Saturday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to remove the westbound South Valley Mills Drive bridge over the I-35 mainlanes beginning Saturday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. to Sunday, Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. (MAP BELOW.) To safely and efficiently complete this work, crews plan to temporarily close all I-35 mainlanes between New Road and 17th Street. The eastbound South Valley Mills Drive bridge over I-35 will also be closed during this time.
Expect delays, and motorists are advised to plan any travel in advance.

When will the bridge removal work begin?
This overnight work will begin Saturday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. to Sunday, Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. During this period, all I-35 mainlanes between New Road and 17th Street will be closed.
How long will the mainlane closures last?
The work will occur overnight, approximately 15 hours.
How will traffic flow through Waco?
- For northbound mainlane traffic, drivers will be directed off the mainlanes after New Road and use the newly reconstructed I-35 northbound frontage road to bypass the Waco Traffic Circle and reenter the mainlanes at 12th Street.
- For southbound mainlane traffic, drivers will be directed to the I-35 southbound frontage road at Exit 333A (Valley Mills Drive and La Salle Avenue) and reenter the mainlanes after Irving Lee Street.
- For eastbound South Valley Mills Drive traffic, drivers will turn right onto the southbound I-35 frontage road and use the turnaround at New Road to head northbound towards the traffic circle.
- For westbound South Valley Mills Drive traffic, drivers will turn right onto Circle Road to access the northbound I-35 frontage road and use the turnaround at 12th Street to head southbound towards South Valley Mills Drive.
Will underpasses in the closed mainlane areas be closed?
Yes, to maintain traffic flow on the frontage roads, east and westbound underpasses in this area will also be closed for the duration of the removal:
- Crossing at 17th and 18th streets
- Crossing at Irving Lee Street/Primrose Drive
- New Road and 12th Street will remain open for east and westbound crossings and turnaround movements during the closure.
