Podcast Points: Student Regents Share Their Experiences Advancing Baylor’s Mission

Student Regents at Baylor University work on behalf of the best interest of the University while facilitating and communicating the views and experiences of students. It is an honor to hold the title of Student Regent and unique opportunity to voice the perspectives of students to the Board of Regents. In this Baylor Connections podcast, Xavier Dawes, a senior electrical and computer engineering major, and Meghan Fletcher, a doctoral candidate in higher education and leadership, give listeners an inside look how their role helps better the student experience and the University as a whole.

 Student Regent Honor
  • Fletcher often responds to questions about role she plays as a Student Regent on the Board of Regents. The position is an honor and value, she said, as they help make decisions for a preeminent R1 Christian institution.
  • “We have the honor of working with Dr. Kevin Jackson, Vice President for Student Life, while also getting to work with our student body leaders in advocating for the University,” Dawes said.
A Unified Mission
  • Working with Student Life and Student Government leaders, Dawes said everyone comes together to reveal a unified mission of moving Baylor forward.
  • When collaboration is prioritized, “It helps everyone be on the same page while also creating a unified voice,” Dawes said.
A Glimpse Behind the Curtain
  • Dawes and Fletcher both express their gratitude for the opportunity to see Baylor University up close and where the action happens. Fletcher shares the respect that she has gained from the leaders at Baylor and their work to grow the institution.
  • “The faith-driven leadership and the way that people are seeking Kingdom work as well as our mission showcases how well the Board members and executive leadership is stewarding a place like Baylor,” Fletcher said.
Spiritual Growth
  • Dawes and Fletcher talked about Baylor as a preeminent Christian university that holds tight to Christian values and pursues excellence. Dawes said Baylor not only encourages character development and spiritual growth but also produces a purposeful question of what someone wants their purpose to be, not just as a citizen of the United States but also as a child of God.
  • “As an institution, Baylor continuously walks with humility and seeks the glory of God,” Fletcher said.
