Podcast Points: NIL 101 with Baylor’s NIL General Manager
David Kaye, Baylor’s NIL general manager, joins Baylor Connections for a crash course in NIL, unpacking the changing landscape of student-athlete revenue streams
Beginning July 2021, college athletes across the country were permitted to sign endorsements to receive revenue from their name, image and likeness. David Kaye leads Baylor’s new in-house NIL unit under Baylor Athletics, which monitors trends, needs and changes in legislation regarding NIL and helps maintain a competitive strategy.
Kaye joined the weekly Baylor Connections podcast for a conversation about changes in NIL, what that means for student-athletes and Baylor’s commitment to setting up student-athletes for success.
Podcast Points with David Kaye on NIL
Defining NIL
NIL refers to the ability for college athletes to monetize their name, image and likeness.
This means athletes can now earn compensation from merchandise like jerseys and video game appearances, as well as in-person appearances, clinics and the promotion or endorsement of products and services which was previously not allowed.
Collectives & Baylor’s GXG
Baylor’s GXG (Green and Gold) Collective was formed with Startup Waco. GXG seeks to connect student-athletes with NIL opportunities and also helps them treat NIL as their own startup business.
Kaye said that Baylor understands the importance of fostering long-term financial literacy and entrepreneurship for student-athletes. “GXG helps them with tax prep, if they need to form an LLC, anything that an entrepreneur might need.”
Transparency and Ethics
Kaye highlights the importance of being intentional about NIL in a way that is both transparent with prospective and current student-athletes and keeps Baylor competitive. “We’re intentional to try to make sure we’re competitive so that if everything else lines up, they choose to be a Baylor Bear.”
Helping student-athletes make sound financial decisions and set themselves up for success long-term is one overarching focus of Baylor Athletics. Kaye shares that it is important for “donors and our fans to know that Baylor is really trying to do this the right way.”
