TONIGHT: TxDOT to Begin Traffic Switch on University Parks Drive

September 9, 2021

WACO, Texas (Sept. 9, 2021) - The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to close all lanes of University Parks Drive where they cross under I-35 tonight (Thursday, Sept. 9) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Friday, Sept. 10, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to shift traffic onto the newly reconstructed lanes on the south side of University Parks Drive and begin reconstructing the pavement on the north side of the roadway.

We do not anticipate that this work will have any impact on Saturday’s Baylor football game at 6 p.m. at McLane Stadium.

After traffic is shifted, crews plan to close all lanes of University Parks Drive where they cross under I-35 nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., beginning Monday, Sept. 13, to Friday. Sept. 17, to set beams - the support structures for the mainlanes - on the new overpass.

For both traffic events:

  • Eastbound traffic will be directed to use the southbound frontage road where drivers can cross under I-35 using 5th Street.
  • Westbound traffic will be directed to use the northbound frontage road where drivers can cross under I-35 using Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

TxDOT recommends that drivers and pedestrians avoid the area and instead use the crossing and marked pedestrian path under I-35 at 5th Street. The marked pedestrian path at University Parks Drive will reopen with the roadway and will be accessible for students and others to use.

Plan ahead and visit waco4bmap.org, for real-time traffic and pedestrian crossing information on I-35 through Waco. Follow @TxDOTWaco on Twitter for the most current updates on construction activities and lane closures.
