Monday Morning: TxDOT to Remove Northbound I-35 Overpass at 4th/5th Streets

WACO, Texas (March 28, 2021) - The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to close 4th and 5th Streets and the pedestrian paths under I-35 as early as 9 a.m. Monday, March 29, to remove the northbound I-35 overpass at 4th and 5th.

  • Eastbound drivers on 5th Street (from downtown toward campus) will be directed to the southbound frontage road where they can turn around at 18th Street.
  • Westbound drivers on 4th Street (from campus toward downtown) will be directed to the northbound frontage road where they can turn around at University Parks Drive.
  • Pedestrians should use the existing pathways at University Parks Drive to cross I-35 while work is taking place at 4th/5th Streets.
    • Pedestrians - Be Safe, Be Seen and remember to make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
    • Drivers - Yield right-of-way to pedestrians, especially when turning.
    • Plan ahead and visit www.waco4bmap.org for real-time pedestrian path and traffic information.

Overpass removal is expected to take up to five days, and the roadway and pedestrian paths will reopen once work is complete.

Additionally, TxDOT is preparing to shift southbound mainlane traffic onto the newly reconstructed lanes from BUS 77 to N Loop 340 overnight, Wednesday, March 31. More information on the traffic shift will be shared as work progresses.
