Dr. Sandeep Mazumder Appointed Crenshaw Dean of Baylor's Hankamer School of Business

WACO, Texas (April 1, 2021) – Following a nationwide search, Baylor University Provost Nancy Brickhouse, Ph.D., announced today that Sandeep Mazumder, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Economics at Wake Forest University, has been selected as The William E. Crenshaw Endowed Dean of Baylor's nationally ranked Hankamer School of Business. His appointment is effective July 1.

Dr. Mazumder will succeed Terry S. Maness, D.B.A., who is retiring this spring after serving as business school dean since 1997.

Mazumder received his B.A. and M.A. in economics from St. Catharine’s College at Cambridge University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Johns Hopkins University. He joined Wake Forest in 2009 as an assistant professor of economics. He was promoted to associate professor in 2015 and also spent that year as a visiting scholar with the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., where he conducted research on inflation for the IMF's annual "spillover report."

In 2016, Mazumder was appointed associate chair, and one year later, he was elected chair, leading the department's goals and budget planning, faculty recruitment and retention, tenure and review, and mentoring of junior faculty and students. He served a one-year appointment as Chair of Chairs for Wake Forest College, representing all department chairs with the Dean. He was promoted to the rank of full professor in 2020.

Mazumder's research and teaching interests include macroeconomics, monetary economics, international monetary economics and time-series econometrics. He has focused much of his research on U.S. inflation dynamics and the Phillips Curve, and has published more than 30 articles in journals such as the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, Macroeconomic Dynamics and the Journal of Macroeconomics, for which he serves as an associate editor. He is a member of the American Economic Association, Southern Economic Association, Eastern Economic Association and International Atlantic Economic Association. He also teaches several courses, including Intermediate Macroeconomics, Applied Econometrics, Monetary Theory and Policy and International Finance.

In addition to his academic role, Mazumder has served on several boards, committees and working groups at Wake Forest, including the Learning Assistance Center Faculty Advisory Board, Chairs’ Ad Hoc Committee to Survey Office of the Dean of the College, College Academic Commons Working Group overseeing the construction of a new academic building on the campus, Dean’s Ad Hoc Merit Evaluation Committee, Archie Award Selection Committee, Curriculum Committee that oversees additions and revisions to the university curriculum and faculty advisor for the formation of a new Wake Forest study-away program in San Francisco.

Mazumder has earned a number of fellowship and grants, including the graduate student fellowship in the Department of Economics at Johns Hopkins, a research grant on The Economics of Global Poverty at Calvin College, the Presidential Trust/Hough Family Faculty Fellowship at Wake Forest and selection for the Leadership Development Program at Wake Forest for senior administrative leaders and tenured faculty members who are in leadership roles or who have a desire to attain one in the future.

Mazumder has served as an executive steering committee member for the Liberal Arts Macroeconomics Conference, which was held at Wake Forest in 2018. He also organized and hosted the College Fed Challenge Regional Competition, an academic competition where teams of students research and analyze economic conditions and present their analysis including a recommendation for monetary policy.
