WACO, Texas (Oct. 1, 2021) – Glenn Loury, Ph.D., Brown University economist and expert on the social aspects of race, will be the featured speaker at the Free Enterprise Forum at Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business, hosted by the John F. Baugh Center for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise on Tuesday, Oct. 5.

Loury, a professor of economics and Merton P. Stoltz Professor of the Social Sciences at Brown University, has published more than 200 works focusing on racial inequality and social policy. Some of his works include the award-winning book “One by One, From the Inside Out: Essays and Reviews on Race and Responsibility in America” and the “Anatomy of Racial Inequality.”

Loury's lecture, will focus on developments in race relations, including antiracism, the shift of focus from diversity to equity and inclusion and the role of markets in addressing racial bias.

“Race is obviously one of the most important and visible issues of our day,” said Peter Klein, Ph.D., professor in the department of entrepreneurship at Baylor. “It is commonly believed that profit-seeking behavior by entrepreneurs and firms ignores or even exacerbates racial disparities and that only collective action through government programs, social movements and education can alleviate racial conflict. It is important to think more carefully about how entrepreneurship and market competition affect vital societal issues such as race and identity.”

In the past, the Free Enterprise Forum has hosted national and international leaders such as American Enterprise Institute president Arthur Brooks, Shakespearean scholar Paul Cantor and economist and journalist Tim Harford.

“The Free Enterprise Forum is designed to expose Baylor students, faculty and staff as well as the broader Waco community to important ideas, issues and debates about the nature of the free enterprise system and its impact on society," Klein said.

The event, co-sponsored by the department of economics in the Hankamer School of Business, is free and open to the public. It will begin at 5:30 p.m.
