May 13, 2020
Construction Update

WACO, Texas (May 13, 2020) – Construction crews plan to close all north and southbound I-35 mainlanes near Forrest Street, just north of the Baylor University campus, beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 14, through 6 a.m. to continue work on the turnaround lane at Forrest Street. Additionally, to keep the traveling public safe and traffic flowing during this time, some side streets, where they cross I-35, will be closed.

Detour Information

  • Northbound drivers will be directed to exit at MLK Boulevard (Exit 335C) and may reenter the mainlanes north of BUS 77.
  • Southbound drivers will be directed to exit at US 84/Waco Drive (Exit 338A) and may reenter the mainlanes south of 5th Street.

The following streets will be closed to all east and westbound cross traffic at I-35:

  • 4th/5th Streets
  • University Parks Drive
  • MLK Boulevard
  • Forrest Street
  • BUS 77
  • US 84/Waco Drive

East and westbound drivers will be allowed to cross under I-35 at:

8th Street to Close at the Northbound Frontage Road

Crews have reopened Dutton Avenue from 5th Street to 8th Street (by Martin Hall, Brooks College and Kokernot Hall), which serves as an option to access 8th Street or 4th/5th streets. Crews will soon close 8th Street at the northbound frontage road. This will allow crews to continue installing drainage features and work on other construction activities in preparation for reconstructing the northbound frontage road. The roadway is anticipated to reopen in mid-2020.

Northbound Frontage Road Closed from 14th to 9th Streets

All lanes on the northbound frontage road are currently closed from 14th to 9th Streets to allow crews to work on installing drainage features, and other construction activities, to prepare for reconstructing the roadway. Local traffic is being directed to 16th Street to connect with Speight Avenue for access to local businesses and residences through this section. The roadway is anticipated to reopen summer 2020.
