WACO, Texas (Sept. 5, 2019) – September is National Preparedness Month, and it serves as an opportune time to share information regarding safety and security with new and returning students, faculty and staff on campus.

Baylor University’s Department of Public Safety launched “Sic ‘em for Safety,” a safety awareness campaign aimed at providing the Baylor community with resources and information related to personal safety.

During the month, Baylor DPS will be sharing information about the University’s extensive notification system in the event of an emergency, the role of the global preparedness team to help keep students, faculty and staff safe abroad on mission and educational trips, Baylor’s robust camera surveillance system and the implementation of police officer body cameras.

“Sic ‘em for Safety is an example of how the department is proactive about safety and security,” said Mark Childers, associate vice president of Public Safety and Security at Baylor. “We are continuously assessing and implementing best practices in public safety for the Baylor campus community. We want the community that we diligently serve to know the resources available to them and how important taking ownership in one’s personal safety is.”

As part of the safety awareness campaign, Baylor DPS has released an active attack training video. The “Avoid. Deny. Defend.” training video educates students, faculty and staff on how to respond in the event of an active shooter or attack situation.

“The ‘Avoid. Deny. Defend.’ active attack training video is designed to provide vital and potentially life-saving information on how to respond to an active aggressor in any situation or location. We understand the subject matter of the video is sensitive, and our goal is to ensure that students, faculty and staff are educated, prepared and confident in their response should a violent attack occur here or any place they find themselves,” Childers said.

Sic ‘em for Safety will culminate with the annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, Oct. 1, on Fountain Mall on the Baylor campus. NNO is an annual nationwide community-building campaign to promote police-community partnerships. This year’s NNO will feature a live-fire dorm room burn to demonstrate the importance of fire prevention, among other events for students that promote overall campus safety and crime prevention.
