Business Forum to Discuss 'International Issues in Health Care'

The McBride Center for International Business at Baylor University will host the Global Business Forum from Tuesday, March 23, to Friday, March 26 in the Cashion Academic Building of the Hankamer School of Business on the Baylor campus. The forum will include prominent international speakers, film presentations and panel discussions by international students. All lectures and activities will focus on the theme of "International Issues in Health Care."

"At a time when part of the health care reform in the U.S. is to digitize medical records, health care tech and development is an important part of what we're doing," said Stephen Gardner, professor of economics at Baylor.

Tuesday

The forum will begin Tuesday with a video presentation of segments from "Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders" at 3 p.m. Following the presentation, Lori Spies, who will be in Africa with a group from Baylor's Louise Herrington School of Nursing, will report on their work in Ethiopia and Sierra Leone via video teleconference. "People come to Baylor school of nursing specifically for the opportunity to be in the group," Gardner said.

Wednesday

The film, Sick Around the World, will be shown at 3 p.m. The film is a comparison of health care systems in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Switzerland.

Thursday

Gerard Anderson, a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will be the keynote speaker for opening dinner at 7 p.m.

Anderson is currently conducting research on chronic conditions, comparative insurance systems in developing countries, medical education, health care payment reform and technology diffusion.

Friday

Sessions will be held all day with panels of two speakers each:

10:10-11 a.m. Global Cooperation in Public Health
David C. Warner, University of Texas at Austin and Nuria Homedes, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

11:15 a.m.-12:05 p.m. International Health Crisis Response
Eric Timmens, Department of Defense and Phillip Nieburg, Center for Strategic and International Studies.

12:15 a.m.-1:50 p.m. Lunch in Blume Banquet Room
David J. Ballard, Baylor Health Care System.

This will be the fourth year for the Global Business Forum. Although most of the events are free and open to the public, registration is also available at the web site for the events that require it.
