Soprano Lynda Keith to Give Recital Feb. 22
by Richard Veit
Soprano Lynda Keith, assistant professor of vocal studies, will present a faculty recital at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, in Roxy Grove Hall. She will be accompanied by Professor of Piano Roger Keyes.
Her program will open with the coloratura aria "Nun eilt herbei" from Otto Nicolai's Shakespearean opera, "Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor" ("The Merry Wives of Windsor"). That will be followed by one of the greatest of all German romantic song cycles, Robert Schumann's "Frauenliebe und -leben," which explores-through the poetry of Adalbert von Chamisso-the relationship of a woman to her husband, from the first glimpse she catches of him, through their marriage, and to his eventual death.
"Three Songs of Kirsten Van Cleve" by 51-year-old American composer Thomas Pasatieri are based on texts by a Dutch poet. The songs-"a night of love," "you know," and "Give Me Then Your Hand"-trace the course of a woman's unrequited love. Francis Poulenc's "Fiançailles pour rire," dating from 1939, is a setting of six poems by Louise de Vilmorin.
Closing the program will be the five-movement "Cantata" by John Carter, who lived from 1929 to 1991.
Keith joined the Baylor University music faculty in 1993. She holds a bachelor's degree from Baylor and a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Roger Keyes has been a member of the Baylor faculty since 1965.
This recital is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor University School of Music at 755-3991.
