Faculty Recital by Pianist Esther Wang Set for Nov. 11
by Richard Veit
The Baylor University School of Music will present a faculty recital by one of its newest members, pianist Esther Wang, at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in Roxy Grove Hall.
The program will open with Frédéric Chopin's "Barcarolle in F-sharp Major," Op. 60, a work that dates from the year 1845.
One of Joseph Haydn's 60 piano sonatas will follow-the Sonata in B Minor, which is listed as No. 32 in Anthony Hoboken's thematic catalogue of the composer's works. It dates from sometime before 1776.
A folk song collection by Béla Bartók will come next, as Wang plays his "Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs," Op. 20. Bartók collected thematic material for these pieces prior to World War I and then wrote his eight "Improvisations" in 1920.
The program will close with a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 28 in A Major, Op. 101. Beethoven was 46 when he composed this work in Vienna.
Esther Wang, who joined the Baylor music faculty in August of this year as a lecturer in piano, graduated from Baylor with a degree in piano performance in May of 1985. While at Baylor, she was a student of Roger Keyes and Jane Abbott-Kirk. Prominent among her other teachers have been Lilian Kallir and Jesus Maria Sanromá.
Wang holds her graduate degree in piano performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Before returning to Baylor this year, she served for three years as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin at Platteville.
The recital is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor School of Music at 755-3991.
