by Richard Veit
The Baylor University School of Music will present a weekend of Christmas choral concerts as part of the gala year-long celebration of the School's 75th Anniversary. These Diamond Jubilee Christmas Concerts will include pairs of performances by the Baylor Chamber Singers and the Baylor Combined Choirs.
The Chamber Singers' concerts will be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, in the Armstrong Browning Library's McLean Foyer of Meditation. The Combined Choirs will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, and at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall.
Admission to all concerts will be $5, with proceeds benefiting student scholarships in the School of Music.
The Chamber Singers are led by Donald Bailey, the Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Music, director of vocal studies, and director of choral activities. Their program will feature music of Michael Praetorius, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Leonardo Leo, Samuel Gordon, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and John Rutter, as well as "Who Is He in Yonder Stall?" by the group's founder and former director, Robert H. Young.
The Combined Choirs-consisting of A Cappella Choir, Concert Choir, Women's Chorus, and Men's Glee Club-will sing music of Z. Randall Stroope, Johannes Brahms, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gustav Holst, as well as a set of traditional carols. They will be assisted by members of the Baylor Brass Quintet and the Baylor Brass and Percussion Ensemble.
